Johnston's tone is based on a smooth overdrive with a lot of sustain: the combination of a compressor and an overdrive pedal is one of the keys to recreate that tone.
This can be easily achieved in TH-U thanks to its flexible sound chain.

It's worth a try. You can grab the demo of the full version for 30 days I think. The starter version is a good way to get started on thu also. I love how it lets you build your own signal chain using visual representations of the actual gear. and you can build two signal paths if you want, in the same patch..
