    Seven String Scale Knowledge
    Timing
    Alternate Picking

    Hi Guys Joe here, duo to a increased interest toward the 7-th string guitars from many members of the forum, I've decided to dedicate some lessons to this instrument.

    The idea is to compare all the material we already know on the six string guitar to the seven string one, adding the one string more, to shapes, chords and diagrams we already know, instead of learn them from the scratch.

    Seven Strings Modes 3-notes
    ---------------------------

    The study starts playing from the 6th string, the diatonic modes of the C Major scale 3-notes per strings, ascending, and then descending to the bottom of the seventh string. This way we are forced to visualize the new scale shape as made by the the old sixth strings one, plus the seventh string, accelerating the learning process.

    Theory Focus
    ------------

    A mode is the disposition of tone and semitones starting at a particular note from the parent scale.

    * Ionian: C · D · E · F · G · A · B · C
    * Dorian: D · E · F · G · A · B · C · D
    * Phrygian: E · F · G · A · B · C · D · E
    * Lydian: F · G · A · B · C · D · E · F
    * Mixolydian: G · A · B · C · D · E · F · G
    * Aeolian: A · B · C · D · E · F · G · A
    * Locrian: B · C · D · E · F · G · A · B

    In this case, this scale all contains notes from the C major scale, but it has a different sound because we started on different notes, giving us a different disposition of intervals.

    Techniques Focus
    ----------------

    In this study we use constant alternate picking, and string crossing, is facilitated further by the use of odd number per string; It's not a coincidence that many fast picker like Paul Gilbert, Al Di Meola, John Petrucci Etc. prefer this way of arrange notes on the fretboard.

    Pro tips
    --------

    After you gained some confidence with these shapes, spend some time improvising over the extended Jam track, to make them second nature.
