Chris Evans - In The Style Of Vivian Campbell SI Lesson
Contents |
Introduction
Well it's taken a little longer than planned/expected but I`ve finally finished it!! My stab at another "In the style of lesson" this time the fabulous Vivian Campbell!!
Vivian burst onto the scene with Dio way back in the mid 80`s when I`d not long been playing guitar, amongst a few others he climbed right to the top of the pile as one of my biggest influences in my early years of playing, he was just the kind of guitarist I wanted to be later on, loads of screaming harmonics and fast shreding runs unfotunatly I`ve never quite managed to reach that kind of level but here I`ve given it my best shot and using (especially in the last third of this lesson) a few of his licks that appeared a lot during his time with Dio.
Vivian is of course still a top guitarist and now resides with Def Leppard.
The Lesson
On to the lesson and I hope you enjoy it, a lot of sweat and tears have gone into this one
Various keys, used throughout, starting in E, moving to G and the final part in Dm, I will add some fret boards as soon as I`ve finished them
Main Video: VC_Main_Video.mpg ( 11.96MB )
Part 1
Part 1: VC_Vid_Part_1.mpg ( 9.24MB )
Part 1 tab: Part_1_tab.txt ( 816bytes )
E||----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E-------------------------------------------------
B--------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------6-----7-------9--<>10--
A--6-----------/7--7------7-----7----------------
E-----9-<>7--------------------------------------
A fairly easy start in, nothing too tricky in there, just remember to use lots of palm muting
Part 2
Part 2: VC_Vid_Part_2.mpg ( 7.01MB )
Part 2 tab: Part_2_tab.txt ( 947bytes )
E||----------------------------------------------------------
B||-----------3-----------5---------------------------------

D-5--3--5-----5-----------5--------------5--3--5--3------3-----------------
A--------------------------------------------------------5-----5--3--5--3-----
E----------------------------------------------------------------------------3--
This part again not too tricky as it mainly follows the backing, hitting the pinched harmonics and the ending run is probably the trickiest art here.
Part 3
Part 3: VC_Vid_Part_3.mpg ( 7.24MB )
Part 3 tab: Part_3_tab.txt ( 1.47K )
E||-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D------------------------------------------------
A--12--10--8--10--12--10--8-----------------

Again, lots of palm muting, some tricky timing through most part of this section

G----------------13---------------13--12br--10--12--10--12--9--
D--------------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------
Again the timing is a little tricky not a complete straight run, bit of speed burst required, lots of palm muting also
Part 5
Part 5: VC_Vid_Part_5.mpg ( 4.67MB )
Part 5 tab: Part_5_tab.txt ( 1003bytes )
E||--17--15--13--12--15--13--12------13--12----------12----------------
B||-----------------------------------15----------15--13------15--13--11--
G||---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D||---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A||---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E||---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
B--15--13--11--10--13--11--10------11--10----------10---------------
G-----------------------------------12----------12--10------12--10--9--
D--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------
B----------------------------
G--12--10--9---------------
D---------------12--10--8--
A---------------------------
E---------------------------
Probably the hardest run down in the piece, due to the awkward timing, I really struggled with this part in the slower video, I felt a little lost without the backing to keep me in time.
Part 6
Part 6: VC_Vid_Part_6.mpg ( 5.82MB )
Part 6 tab: Part_6_tab.txt ( 1.33K )

Backing Tracks
Backing tracks (Quick note here, a big thanks to Andrew for re-tracking the drums for me on the backing track and showing me the error of my ways by not using VST`s thanks mate)
VC_backing_track_130BPM.mp3 ( 999.92K )
VC_Backing_110BPM.mp3 ( 1.15MB )
VC_Backing_90BPM.mp3 ( 1.41MB )
VC_Backing_70BPM.mp3 ( 1.83MB )
I hope you`ve enjoyed this one as much as I have, its been a real challenge putting this together, for a period I nearly ditched it, but instead thanks to your input from the demo I posted I carried on with it.
From this lesson at the moment I am working on a couple of spin off lessons, one of them focusing on pinched harmonics.
All the best and see you on the forums
Chris
