Hammerfall Was first founded in 1993 when former Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oskar Dronjak and the current In flames guitarist Jesper Strömblad decided to start a new musical project togheter. The band was later joined by the Niklas Sundin(Guitar) Jahon Larsson(Bass) and Niklas Stanne(Vocal). However Niklas Sundin and Johan Larsson stay in the band were short and they left the band the following year and they were replaced by Glen Ljungström(Guitar) and Fredrik Larsson(Bass). For Dronjak and Strömblad Hammerfall was just a sideprojekt in the beginning and both of them had other bands on the side. The band played mostly in a local contest called rockslaget. They had a few song written but they played mostly Iron Maiden covers. In 1996 Hammerfall reached the semifinals of Rockslaget but they were soon to find out that the singer Niklas Stanne was not going to be able to perform in the semifinals. They quickly started looking for a replacment singer and thats when they found Joakim Cans. Unfortually they didnt quallify for the finals but they played a great show and Joakim Cans became an offical member of the band. After the succes of their show in Rockslaget the band send a demo to a record company i The Netherlands. They liked what they heard and the following year was spent on making songs for their first album, Glory To The Brave. The album was realesed in The Netherlands in 1997 and got very positive reactions. Now when the band grew more popular the time for the members who had other projects on the side were limited. Jepser Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström had to leave the bands as they were commited to In Flames, also the bass player Fredrik Larsson had another band to play in. They quickly found a replacment guitarist and drummer in Stefan Elmgren and Patrik Räfling. Fredrik Larsson decided to stay in the band untill they could find a replacement for him. In may 1998 Magnus Rosen joined the band and problem was solved.

The first idea with the band was that they were going to met a few times every year and participate in The rockcompetion Rockslaget. When they had made it to the Semifinal their singer Mikale Stanne couldn`t participate so they had to bring in Joakim Cans for this event. They didnt make it to the finale but a demo was sent to a dutch record company.

Oskar and Joakim contiuned writing songs togheter and 1997 they realesed their first album, Glory To The Brave. When they had realesed the album Stefan Elmgren(Guitar), Anders Johansson(Drums)and Magnus Rosen(Bass) joined the band. In 1998 the band realesed their second album called Glory To The Brave. It was said That Hammerfall were pioneers of modern 80s Heavy Metal music. They were often credited that they had broght back the melody and honesty in the music and it continued when they realesed their third album, Renegade in the year 2000. This album became the big breakthrough for the band and Heavy Metal music in Sweden. In 2002 they realsed their third album called Crimson Thunder and the year after they recorded a live DVD in thier hometown of Gothenburg infront of an enthusiastic crowd. in 2005 Hammerfall reaesed their fifth album, Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. The band now went out on their forth world tour and they were the headlining band for the first time ever in the shows in the US.

The band has recorded two sportsrelated videos. They made a remake of Hearts On Fire toghtere with the Swedish Olympic Womens Curling Team. They also made a brand new song specially written for Kajsa Bergqvist and some other Swedish track and field superstar. The video was then aired on the opening ceremony of the 2006 Athletic Championchip. Át the end of that year they realesed a new album called Threshold and the following year they traveled around the world promoting the new album.

In march 2007 the bass guitar player Magnus Rosen announced that he was going to leave the band. The band quickly found a new bass player in Fredrik Larsson. Since this was the bands ten year anniversy they realesed a collection CD, Steel Meets Steel, Ten Years Of Glory. The CD contained a couple of re-recorded old songs, two new songs plus some bonus material for true Hammerfall fans.
