History

The Beginnings The story of Ibanez guitars begins long ago in 1908 with the company Hoshino Gakki who was a producer of sheet music. In 1935 this company began manufacturing string instruments, mostly acoustics. This company had very little presence in the united states until the mid 1960's. They produced a guitar that was shipped to the states as early as 1929. This guitar was the Salvador Ibanez Acoustics which was produced in Japan. This workshop was destroyed during the Spanish civil war. Hoshino Gakki then bought the rights to the Ibanez brand name and began creating more standard acoustics which would later just be called Ibanez.

The Modern Era" The beginning of Ibanez as we know it begins in 1957. This is a time where the Hoshino Gakki company began coming out with some wild looking designs for guitars. It was at this time (around 1960) that Gibson and Fender and Rickenbacker compies were becoming popular. Using lower prices materials and building more guitars, Ibanez was able to offer cheap copies of these guitars that still held a high quality. These guitars were very popular and because these years were considered bad years for the original guitar companies the Ibanez copies were doing extremely well. Soon after this Ibanez was beginning to get sued by the original manufacturers and thus began the creation of Ibanez Originals starting with the Iceman and Roadster Models. From this time on Ibanez created its own guitars. It was in the mid 1980's that Ibanez really took off with its addition of the JEM! Due to Hoshino Gakki's relationship with Steve Vai the JEM soared and allowed for the entry of the Ibanez Universe guitars as well. In the early 1980's Ibanez entered the "superstrat" market with its RG line, which essentially were lower quality JEM's. It was also in the time frame that Ibanez began making its pedals and amps.

Ibanez is primarily a guitar company but carries many other products. Electric Guitars, Basses, 7 strings, Acoustic Guitars, Effect Pedals and Amps are all manufactured under the Ibanez Brand.

Guitar Models

Ibanez RG series (previously named Roadstar Guitar, hence the name RG), are the Ibanez superstrat guitars, all featuring 24-fret slim necks. Most of the Ibanez RG models have bolt-on-necks with high-performing tremolos, although some are neck-thru or fixed bridge models. The first Ibanez RG was the 550 in 1987, which was the cheaper version of the Ibanez JEM, Steve Vai's signature model. It featured pretty much the same specifications except for the "Monkey Grip", the "Lion's Claw" below the tremolo, the Vine or Pyramid inlay and the DiMarzio pickups. Shape, colors, pickup configurations, and woods were pretty much the same. From 1987 to present the RG came out in hundreds different versions, some having different pickups and pickup configurations (HSH, HH, HSS, HS etc), some lacking the pickguard and some with different woods, tremolos, and colors. It is not clearly known how many versions have appeared since 1987. In 2003, Japanese-made RGs became the RG Prestige series, which featured an all-new neck construction (much more reliable now), a redesigned tremolo (Edge-Pro) and a 6-step special treatment to the fretboard for even more comfortable playing.
