Sound

Nevermore deliver an intense, heavy, progressive, melodic, and beautiful collage of massive 7 string riffage and virtuoso soloing. Technical and rhythmic drumming, searing harmonies, vocals from the chords of god himself all into one of my favorite albums of all time.

Guitars

Jeff Loomis once again shows us how heavy is done right. With 7 string riffage that just dominates the metal community as some of the best riffs you'll hear, Every song is done near perfectly with careful attention paid to each and every note. Songs like "Narcosynthesis", "Dead Heart In A Dead World", "We Disintegrate" and even the cover of Simon and Garfunkles "The Sound Of Silence" are just some of the most intense and heavy riffs ever produced from a guitar, And of course, there is the thing Loomis is known for most, His solos. Easily on par with any guitarist you can name in terms not only of technical ability, but on melody and phrasing as well. "Believe In Nothing" has one of the most beautiful solo's he has ever produced, as does "The Heart Collector", and the octave harmonies of "Narcosynthesis" are pure other-worldly.

Bass

7
Solid and well played, But nothing really amazing except for the song 'Dead Heart In A Dead World', which does have a very beautiful bass intro melody. Throughout the album it chugs alongside Loomis, occasionally jumping out and doing a quick, subtle, counter melody. But, it does its job, Nothing you can really complain about.

Drums

8
Heavy and fast, just like the guitars, With great snare, tom, double-bass, and cymbal control through and through. The double bass in "The Sound Of Silence" is just incredible, gets your head bangin' every time. Reminds me a lot of more of a Death Metal style with a hint of Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart on the more progressive parts on the album.

Vocals

10
Absolutely incredible. Warrel Dane's voice is nothing short of perfect for the entire duration of the album. His performances are filled with so much emotion and heart put into every verse, chorus, word and syllable. His voice strikes hard with me, right in the chest. He makes you feel every ounce of sorrow, or anger, or frustration or joy and does so with phenomenal conviction. Songs I must mention are "The River Dragon Has Come", "Dead Heart In A Dead World", "The Heart Collector", "We Disintegrate", and my absolute favorite, "Believe In Nothing", which has one of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.

Lyrics

Always speaking a message, telling a story, or purging an emotion, Nevermore's lyrics vary from strong political standpoints, to personal battles going on inside. Very well done, They really speak to the individual, and have really spoken to me.

From "Believe In Nothing"

Into a strange new world, into the after
All your tears might find you've fallen too far
Take another look, take another ride
Can't we make them leave the hate behind

And I still believe in nothing
Will we ever see the shape of tomorrow?

Into the empty storm, into the formless loss of hope,
Where we can forget the game

And I still believe in nothing
Will we ever see the cure for our sorrow

Nothing is sacred when no one is saved
Nothings forever so count your days
Nothing is final and no one is real
Pray for tomorrow and find your empty still

Nothing...

From "The Heart Collector"

To see the actor without tears
Dark rivers carve the years between the lines of self control
In my psychotic karmic fear, I own your tears anyway
And I am you and we are not afraid

And we won't be here for long
The heart collector sings his song that's slowly boiling over

Nevermore to feel the pain
The heart collector sang
And I won't be feeling hollow for so long
Nevermore to feel the pain
The words fall out like fire
Just believe when you can't believe anymore

The stage is empty now
I hope we hold and cannot allow
The corrupt eclectic takes his fatal bow
And we won't be here for long

Nevermore to feel the pain
The heart collector sang
And I won't be feeling hollow for so long
Nevermore to feel the pain
The words fall out like fire
Just believe when you can't believe anymore

From "Evolution 169"

Welcome to the pleasure dome, now take a seat the crowd is watching you
Just rats in this experiment
Now learn the maze but don't tear yourself in two
Don't let it pull you down

And one by one we crawl, and two by two
Into the mouth of madness, we seek the perfect view
We reach another turn then fall out of time
In organized chaos
Evolution 169

You can touch but never taste the answers
Like the way that I want you
Today I killed my ego, if hell is real
Dear god please tie mynoose
And then he pulled me down

And one by one we crawl, and two by two
Into the mouth of madness we seek the perfect view
We reach another turn then fall out of time
In organized chaos
Evolution 169
And one by one we crawl, and two by two
Into the mouth of madness, we fly away

Don't set your mind to one side
Don't set your mind to one side
