If you want anything to sound decent then you need a soundcard. You have USB cards for $80. If you have a mic input you can use that for "line in" but you might have some sync problems and a lot of noise with those built-in cards.

Try portable usb products from presonus or focusrite, great preamps on those units.

I use Line 6 Toneport UX2. Pod Studio (as its called now) GX will be a great solution for portable recording. Its cheap and it sounds very good + its very easy to use and dial in cool tones...
