lol i was told the same thing when i wanted to go from a squire to a pretige, and my parents said "whats wrong with the old one?"
fact is you gotta live with the fact that your mother and sister just dont know anything about guitars. just like all the other paretns, sisters and friends unless they are musicians, you should have seen the faces i got when i told peopel how much i paid for this guitar.
they also cannot judge how good you are. play some songs they know from some bands they love and youll see how much they change their opinion even if they include 4 chords and and a 10 second 3 note solo. because they dont really have the tools to judge how good you are with the guitar. im sure they dont listen to metal or shred guitar and im guessing by your guitar list that thats what you play.

QUOTE (Jakub Luptovec @ Sep 3 2009, 04:10 PM) *
Few minutes ago I get into really heavy argument with my mother and sister (them ganging up on me), that new guitar for me is waste.

I am playing for two years, practicing up to 16 hours a day - guitar is my passion, yet sometimes I have those ideas to just throw it out of window (especially while practicing for too long biggrin.gif). And she now came to me, telling me, that I am not that good player, that my guitar is good enough for me, that I think too much of myself and I dont know anything about guitars after playing for two years (thousands of guitars came through my hands tho...).

I have money for laptop for university and (while selling my guitar) also for new higher ranged Ibanez. My guitar just doesnt.. fit in my hands anymore.. its that feeling, that its time to move on and get a new one.. I dont know how to tell that feeling - I just hope, that I am not alone in that, since now I look like a fool, having no way to describe, WHY I NEED new guitar..

Any help pls?sad.gif

Note that she played acoustic as self taught when yount (40 years ago) but she never even touched electric and doesnt know anything about them.

Please continue playing. I started at 15 and quit at 16-17. Sold all my gear just because I got bored of playing power chord songs like Korn or Green Day. I never really focused on technique or rhythm, my sister would tell me I sucked and I eventually lost interest and went on to more devious things.

Well, I am am 25 now, and two years ago I picked up my friends guitar and laid down the only pentatonic lick I knew at the time and he looked at me with amazment. He said that I should practice and that is what I did. I went and bought a guitar the next day, nothing too fancy but one to get me back in with a good tone.

It was hard the first year, I wanted to give up. I would look at tabs or sheet music and swear it was transcribed wrong just because I could not play it.

Now, I am playing with a couple of projects while I look to start my own. I have learned to play lead. Harmonize over riffs I create and I am still learning.

Most importantly, I dedicated myself to rhythm placement. You cannot sound good if you are not placing the notes in the right spots and it will sound terrible to ohter people. So learn how to read note values or understand them, and practice!

On the otherhand, however, it has all been settled this morning (I basically took the best out of this thread and told it to her) and if all goes well, it will be in my hands in few hours!!! And nothing can stop me now, from controlling the world! ph34r.gif Mohahahahaha :evil laughter:

I think that parents don't understand that guitars are different. For many people "guitar is a guitar" and the only difference is the look of it. And of course any "wise" man would know, that spending another few hundred $$$ just to have the same thing that looks again -- almost the same as the one that You already have, is a bad idea. The third thing is, that most people aren't so "guitar resistant" --> we guitar players, can listen to guitar and nothing else for hours, but most people will have enough of guitar quite fast. Add to this, that Your mother/sister listens to all Your exercises as well as actual pieces of music, so they hear "nice and just tiering" things, and after 2 hours of Your playing they are on their limits for another 14...

Even my ex asked me why should I buy a new guitar, after all it is me not the guitar playing, so I should learn more instead of buying better gear. Of course I did what I wanted with my money (still I have only two electric guitars, and a amp that needs to be replaced).

I'm in my 60's and over 50 years I've spent thousands on guitars and gear. I belong to another site called Shadowmusic and most of us are older being teenagers during the 60's. We have a special phrase when we chop and change guitars its called 'UPS' that is Unecessary Purchase Syndrome.... However at your age you don't come into that category but if you continue to love playing guitars you'll finish up buying a lot more in the future.
Why don't you post a video of you playing something and ask for comments from the teachers here. If the comments are positive you can then get your mother and sister to read them, this is going to give your arguement much substance as they won't argue with the teachers.
If the comments on your video are negative, dont show it to them but you need to take a step back and ask yourself where you might be going wrong here.
I wonder if there is something deeper to this for instance...There''s always two sides to a story, the most obvious one would be what my father said when I was a teenager......

What I'm saying is, if you're spending 16hrs practicing a day and you're at University , how much time are you putting in to your studies?... Maybe they're worried for your future.

They arent - this much time I practiced on high school and still maintained to keep pretty good grades - and with this practice schedule I managed to pass entrance exam on university from totally different field, then my high school was. I also participated in European Youth Parliament, won several competitions in Law, computers etc etc...

I dont really think they are afraid of my future, I myself have big concern in it. They just dont believe me, that I know what I am doing - and as parents always do, they think, they understand everything more than me, because I am their child (yea.. 19yrs old child, but whatever... all parents are the same)

I learned long ago, not to assume that the things my sisters and mother said made any sense, no matter how sure they were of that.

I have a theory on this. This is an evolutionary trait. Women nurture children, that has been traditional. Both male and female. However this often deludes them into thinking they understand what is good for males, as well as they would understand what is good for a female. Men tend to know (if they have sense) that they will never understand women, and to not figure they know what is best for them. Just a legacy that evolution has left us with.

Oh, also be on guard for guys who have been totally indoctrinated, because they will give you similar advice, only won't realize they are really mindless zombies whose minds have been taken over by women. You can identify these type by their dress and the way they wear their hair, sort of like the adult version of dressed up little boys.

My advice, spend you last cent and then more on whatever you want.
