The EMG 81/85 combo?
Nah, that's crazy in cool way. Some say the sound a bit sterile but that improves a bit by adding another battery for 18V alltogether. I want that combo myself for modern stuff that I need to sound a bit cold. Havn't played them more than once myself so I woulnd't really know but I like the way they sound on records and sound clips I've heard. Often together with a Mesa or an Engl -------------------- My bands homepage

If you like how it sounds, why not mate, EMG is cool for hi gain stuff, and it will sound similar in your guitar too. Replacing the pickups is not too much of a hassle, just think about extra batteries and where they will be. I wouldn't drill any extra slots in the guitar only because of the battery - specially not on the JEM.

This is definitely NOT a bad or crazy idea, in my opinion the EMG 81 is one of the best (if not THE best) pickups in the world. I am using it in many of my guitars and I never regretted this And about this prejudice that EMGs sound cold or steril... absolute nonsense in my opinion. But in the end you are the one to decide about your gear anyway, and since you liked the sound of that guitar that had the emg, go for it!

EMGs might be a bit sterile for some bluesy and vintage play,
kind a guitar and an amp gear only, low gain etc, but for rock and everything harder you cannot miss with EMGs. -------------------- Youtube

I know I wouldn't use EMG's for any of my stuff, but if I were in need of any rock riffing and beyond, then I would definitely consider 85.
If battery is not an issue, by all means take it mate -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
