...not really been playing guitar, and still not feeling much like it. It's been that way for the past couple of months or more. I've struggled in the past with some mental health related stuff. Still am. Anyway, I had to go into some work experience/internship to see how well I would fare in that. It was at a sort of school for socially marginalized people. Cool place and all, people were friendly, they liked me, but it still stressed me out to no end. I was either sleeping 2 hours a night, lying awake, or coming straight home from the job and sleeping 15 hours till the next day. It screwed up my sleep a lot, and I lost my motivation for doing anything at all. No guitar, no nothing. I'm hoping I can find my way back to playing and composing. Didn't eat well either. Started getting paranoid and what have we. In the end it wasn't the best of experience.

Yet I've still decided to try my luck with some education, social worker education, which is actually exactly in the above field, or it could be with children or youth. We'll see. But it's still the most realistic education I can do, I think. This takes 3½ years. There's some good news as well though, as I'll likely have more money between my hands than now, even during the education, due to my health situation.

So, I wanna get back at playing guitar and composing, but there's just no inspiration, motivation or anything. It doesn't seem to come natural and it doesn't seem to come when I push for it. Not too happy about that. Maybe some of you have some advice?

So, yeah, I just wanted to share with you guys that I'm still alive and not really kicking though. Hope you're all well and grooving!

I'll try to be more active again around here, as said, the internship kinda ruined a lot for me.

We all lose our inspiration periodically. Hell, I do this for a living and sometimes I don't want to pick up my axe for a week or two. And if I don't have any work ... I don't.

Everybody's experience is different and yours may be a bit more extreme than most, certainly mine but I know that what helps me get 'inspired' is learning something new. Sometimes it's a new style or just a song/solo I always liked but never had the time or the desire to really put the work in to get it. Every time I do that I find myself going on to something completely different which means I may not accomplish what I set out to do but I do accomplish something and that generally gets me back 'into' guitar.

Maybe find someone or a few folks to 'jam' with. Make them teach you a new song. Take a few private guitar lessons.
Participate in one of the collabs here.

Without getting too personal, were/are you taking any anti-anxiety medication? That'll kill any inspiration in anybody.

Your guitar mojo is in your heart mate, it will come back when it's ready. For now, listen to music, spend time outdoors, read a good book before sleeping, anything that helps you to relax.

I'm sure everyone will agree, we look forward to hearing some more of your music when the time is right. Don't rush it mate, we're all here for you smile.gif

Sure, inspiration has always been a bit on/off for me over longer periods. As soon as I got stressed and pressured by the work situation, I dropped everything outside of it. Didn't play guitar, make proper food, no exercise, no nothing.

What always inspired me in the past was going back to some old "classics" albums in my favorite genre, that being prog metal. Or at least some very good albums. Such as Images and Words by Dream Theater as an example.

I've been getting medication for a long time now, since 2013 or so. Not anti-anxiety though, I guess. Not quite sure what it's called in English, but without going into too much detail, the medication is called Abilify. Or Airpiprazole apparently? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aripiprazole

I was on this when I wrote my last piece(s) of music, and I've honestly lacked proper motivation and inspiration long before that.

Thanks, Laurent. I'll try and get back at it. Making music is one of the things that can be challenging, but also give some energy back.

I've started working out every thursday. It's not much, but it's a start. And in two weeks I'm starting a course on health, which includes exercise and some other stuff related to food.

It's now been two weeks I think since I stopped at the internship, and while I have yet to feel inspired to play guitar, one good thing is that I don't have constant heartburn (I think that's what it's called?) anymore. That burning in the chest and throat. So that's a good thing too, I suppose.

I'm also considering getting an electronic drumkit once I have the money for it when I start studying.

Thanks, Phil! Much appreciated. I try to do things that make me relax now, but I don't feel like they charge my batteries. Very few things do. Making music, being there for others etc do charge my batteries, though they're also draining, but in a good way!

Yeah, we all have ups and downs. I think we've spoken a few times about my situation by now, so you know it. I just hope I can find some motivation and inspiration to play and compose music again. It was such a thrill and adrenaline rush to write and record A Celestial Voyage, even if I want to redo it smile.gif

Hi Ben,

I recognise many of the things you describe. One thought : have you tried some kind of daily cardio exercising? In a best case it can solve many of the eating/sleeping/feeling-good-about-oneself issues. In a worst case scenario it's still damn good for you.

Sorry if I am way out with my suggestion, just wanted to add some constructive feedback.

It's all good, Kris smile.gif As stated in one of my replies, I've started going to the gym each Thursday. It's not a lot, but it's a start. And I'm joining a health related course around the start of December, which has some exercising included in the program.

Cool! Just as with the guitar, best is if you can find a type of activity that you enjoy doing (personally I cant stand the gym).

How about walking along the danish shores scouting for see trout, and then you can give us a shot when you have found something. biggrin.gif Include pictures!

Yeah, of course. I don't like the gym that much either. I can be there for 30-40 minutes at a time and then I'm fed up. But it's better than nothing. I sometimes miss playing football, but I know with my fragile knees (5 operations so far from playing football), it would not work, plus I've gained a lot of weight in the past 2 years, since I stopped playing. What I also miss is just someone to share life with and all that smile.gif I know almost 2 years being single isn't that much (after a 4 year relationship), but there's hardly been anyone I've been THAT interested in or anyone that has shown that much interest in me. A muse would be nice smile.gif But that's a completely other story.

I'm not much into fish(ing), though I love eating them smile.gif

We all have bad periods but I'm sure soon you will find again the inspiration. Music is like an incurable disease, you can't get rid of it. Listen your songs, your takes from collabs and try to remember what you felt when you composed all those stuff. The pleasure of playing, that joy, all the emotions are there inside you. All these feelings not disappear forever. The fact that you are good in what you do and you have a damn great sense of melody, should be the main motivation for you smile.gif
As you can see you really have a huge motivation in front of you, just be aware of it. Think in a positive way, have trust in your skills and everything will come back at normal. I believe in your skills wink.gif

Thanks for the encouraging words, Monica!

I've decided to sign up for the VST instruments (EastWest Composer Cloud) again, which is a monthly fee for access to all their instruments. It's still a lot of money, but cheaper than having to buy all their instruments seperately, unless of course you use the subscription for a lifetime smile.gif Having access to all these instruments might inspire me again smile.gif

Thanks for briefing! Sounds to me like you are on the right path towards recovery.

What I have learned from life is that good things come when you least excpect them. So best is to just focus on ones well being, finding good ways to stimulate your brain (for example with music) and body. I never go around and wait for something to happen - I just try to be active in every way I can think of.

I know this is 100% my false point of view, but from that point of view I was quite surprised when reading your post Cael. I believed that people that are already as good at composing as you, will never have motivation problems, because you "went over the border" and now live in the musicians promised land tongue.gif

Now I can only say that I understand your though spot, and send best wishes to you. May you find balance and happiness. I do think that guitar playing will help with that! wink.gif

If there is a promised land I've yet to find it, that's for sure biggrin.gif

I'm trying to find inspiration by going through some old songs that I used to like or still like today, and I also installed all my plugins, midi keyboard and everything. Maybe that will help too!

Good to see you, Ben! Hang in there man. We all go through periods like this I think where we may have a lack of motivation and inspiration for a time. It will pass my friend. Something will come along that will get that motivation and inspiration sparked up again. Peaks and valleys man, it's just part of life. I am sure we will be hearing some more of your creative playing in the near future.
Rock on!

Rock on!

Thanks, Rich smile.gif
