Hi mate! Everything sounds great here! Using your right hand fingers as an anchor point is a good trick to have a more stable picking. Some guitarists do it, others note, but if t works for you, go for it!
I think that you can borrow any other Malmsteen type run from this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Yngwie-Malmsteen-Runs/ What do you think? Parts 4 and 5 are great. -------------------- My lessons

hahah the problem is that Yngwie plays very similar licks! Ok, let's add 5, and maybe you can then continue adding parts from that lesson.
One thing that helped me to learn to play these licks faster was to practice in smaller blocks. You can divide the exercises that you are already practicing, in smaller exercises (1 string, or 2 strings). -------------------- My lessons

Hello Gabby It’s been a long time I hope you and everyone in the GMC family is doing great Let me refresh your mind with what we were working on last time. We started working on these two lessons about a year ago https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Yngwie-Malmsteen-Runs/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Thrash-Like-Mustaine/ I Bashed into the lessons and came with a some takes that revealed some hand sych issues so we had take things more slowly and after we exchanged some notes on the thread with some takes here and there, this is what we came for at last, I played the trash lesson at 132 bpm and the malmsteen runs lesson at 192 bpm. As quoted below Hi Anese! I'll insert your video here so we have it as reference: I compared this one with your previous take and the improvements are very clear! I mostly think that your left hand is now moving much less. It seems that you are getting more comfortable with the patterns. In other words, you are doing an excellent job and there is off course more to do so please continue practicing. Can you tell me exactly what other things you are practicing right now and how much time each day? Now after that I took my time and started to aim for 140 bpm for the trash lesson and 210 bpm for the malmsteen runs lesson .. but ughrr… things weren’t as easy as i expected and the progress was very slow but that didn’t bore me at all, I gave it time and I think now is about time to share some results and see if im still on the right track and what need to be focused on, Take a look and let me know what you think this is the first half of the trash lesson played at 140 bpm And this is the malmsteen runs opening lick, lick No.4 and lick No.5 all played separately at 210 bpm this is also the same malmsteen lesson video but recorded with the phone mic with metronome sound I hope you can find some enjoyment watching that and as always your thoughts and remarks will be very appreciated. thanks for your patience and hard work Take care This post has been edited by Anese: Feb 12 2022, 03:39 AM |

Hi Anese, it's been a while! Nice to have news from you! Thanks for refreshing my mind and for the new videos. Here I go with some feedback. this is the first half of the trash lesson played at 140 bpm Interesting. This lesson is very demanding because it requires fast alternate picking on lower strings with palm muting. You right hand can play at this speed but the faster passages that require left hand work are not sounding consistent enough yet. Both when you play legato or fast picking, the riff becomes less clear and the hand sync issues appear. It's not dramatic at all, but you still need to work on this. i recommend you to isolate the sections that give more problem and work on them as loops. You could also create variations, and your own exercises to help yourself mastering these sections. And this is the malmsteen runs opening lick, lick No.4 and lick No.5 all played separately at 210 bpm this is also the same malmsteen lesson video but recorded with the phone mic with metronome sound I hope you can find some enjoyment watching that and as always your thoughts and remarks will be very appreciated. thanks for your patience and hard work Take care Nice! This is getting better! I think that you need to continue practicing like this, and complement this work with some extra exercises. You can check my new technique course and go directly to the alternate picking lessons. (You could try the whole thing too), so you have more exercises and tips on how to improve this technique. It would be cool if you can share here your progress with it so I can monitor your progress and give tips and feedback. What do you think? -------------------- My lessons

Hi mate! how are you?
Hello Gabby Thanks for your feedback, and sorry for taking all this time to post the updates, i had to take my time practicing them because i think they will increase my level dramatically once i master them. i actually expected this, since i’ve been practicing this one by increasing the backing track tempo only and abandoned practicing it on the metronome click sound. anyhow i feel a little bit lost while playing on the backing as i cant hear what to follow exactly, i know it should be the drums but i just don’t seem to be able to catch the groove naturally. so i will go back to practice with the metronome click back at 110 bpm and i will gradually increase the tempo as i will be posting video updates on every 10 beats increment, I will also play the riffs separately, then i will work on connecting them together. isolation and loops will be implemented as well, i tried it a little and i can see it can be effective. Thanks for the advice. Ok, maybe you can use any slow downer software to practice over the backing track at intermediate speeds. Any DAW can do it. have you thought that? Thanks again i needed this to make sure that I’m on the right track, to be honest i was little skeptical about whether i was on the right track or not, i had to playback my recordings slowed down over and over while practicing to make sure i hear every single note as clear as possible. i even tired it on the trash lesson but it’s a bit tricky there to say which is good note and which not specially on the fast legato sections. now i won’t be increasing the tempo for this one. i will continue practicing them at 210 bpm till i feel more comfortable. however i struggle to reach the 210 bpm tempo because in each session i have to start at about 140-150 bpm and gradually raise it to 210 bpm to able to play it at that speed, any advice on how to make it less ? i feel the practicing tempo should be at least at 170 bpm as a starting point. i will also need to work on how to play those three licks in one take without making any mistakes, this will give me more confidence and endurance to add more licks from that lesson. This is related to your maximum speed and also to the time since you started practicing the exercise. At this point I wouldn't worry about your starting point at the beginning of each session but rather that you can slowly maintain your consistency at higher and higher speeds. Over time, our warming up threshold rises and even with our hands unheated we can play more complex things. it’s nice to hear that you have your own course here, where i can find it ? this should be more effective as you know better how to address your students to practice them in the best way. however right now my time is packed and cant afford to add more material to work on as my eyes are set to finish what im working on right now. but we will definitely start working on your lessons after that. thanks for letting me know. Hello Gabby
I feel like I want to stick to the metronome method more. I feel much comfortable with it, that way I can be much certain that I’m on time. I start my practice session with 15 mins warm up then I spend about an hour to practice the trash lesson at low speed 80 bpm and gradually raise the tempo with 4 beats increments up to 110 bpm Then I start practicing the malmsteen licks lesson, I start at 140 bpm and gradually go up with 4 beats increments to 200~220 bpm with which takes about another hour each day start focusing on different things sometimes less hand movement, shoulders tension, the tightness and consistency of my playing and so on. Here’s a video playing the trash lesson at 110 bpm let me know what you think. Hi mate! how are you? Hello Anese, how are you?
I think your practice routine promises a lot. Not only because you are covering several very important techniques, but it also gives me the feeling that you are excited and motivated. The latter is the most important of all. The video of the trash lesson shows that the work on the metronome is helping a lot. Your timing's improved a lot I just think you're rushing a little bit in some legatos, like the one at minute 00:32, for example. Keep it up as you are well on your way. I hope to see new videos of yours very soon. Greetings! -------------------- My lessons

Hi Anese. Thanks for the update!
Great achievement! Of course you need to keep playing to get more comfortable, but the progress is already great. Once you get comfortable with the speed, you can focus on the details of the sound you achieve with Palm Muting and tweak the connection of the parts and the articulation of the notes a bit. But you're on a very good path! -------------------- My lessons

Hello Gabby, how are you doing ?
I hope things are going well. it’s been a while since I last posted an update about my practicing. Let me brief you about the lessons we're working on. The First lesson is Trash like Mustain Last march I posted a video playing the main two riffs at 120 bpm here: Since then I started practicing to raise the tempo up to 130 bpm here a video i recorded last week at 130 bpm. The Second lesson is malmsten runs My last update was a video playing three licks of that lessons at 210, here since then I continued practicing to raise tempo up to 220, here's a video i recorded this week Playing the same three licks. Let me know what you think. Thanks |
