Beginner's Corner 21: String Bending, Lesson By Bear Rose |
|
Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.
The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Beginner's Corner 21: String Bending by Bear Rose
Hello GMC's instructor and thank you very much for your comments on the previous REC ! I work on this lesson every day for one month and half. That's a challenge for me to reach the correct pitch on bends and give some expressivity with the vibrato. I'm far from Bear's version but that's what I'm able to do at the moment ! |

Hi Daeron! Great to see you working hard on this one.
I notice that your bending is slowly being polished. There is still room to make all bends precise (for example, at 00:34 and at 00:40 you don't reach the correct pitch) but this will happens with practice. Your vibrato is weak and not consistent yet so once you feel comfortable with your bending pitches, it would be good to put your attention on this technique, and combine this lesson with any other that focuses even more on vibrato. Keep on working! -------------------- My lessons

Hey Daeron - great to see you being active in the REC zone
First of all, this was a fair take. It shows that you are on a good path towards getting down the techniques needed to perform this lesson. This being said, my advice would be to take a step back and concentrate only on the bending part first. Just play the lesson without any vibrato. Try to hit the correct note pitches. There are two cool ways to practice bending up to pitch, one is to use a guitar tuner just bend the string and look at the tuner (it should be in chromatic tuning mode) to see visually how your bending looks and how it affects the pitch of the note. With the help of the tuner you'll start to reach the correct pitch when bending and the goal is to practice it until your ear gets accustomed to hearing if the note you are bending is spot on. There will be also some muscle memory in there too but with bending, the amount of bend and movement changes across the fretboard so we do need to rely on our ear primarily to hit the right notes when bending. Another exercise you could do are ones like in this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bending-Ballad/ (check video parts 6 to 9). You'll find some cool bending exercises which you can use to train the technique (ear). This lesson you chose for the REC section is indeed a bit more tricky than it seems as it includes both bending and vibrato. Also there are sections where vibrato is added to bending notes. This is why it needs quite a bit of time to master so overall you are on a very good path towards it. Once you get control of bending and feel more comfortable there, try working on vibrato only. Here is a cool lesson series on vibrato by Ben: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/lessonser...ibrato-Odyssey/ Since you've been working a long time on this lesson and bending + vibrato techniques can take some time to sink in, my advice would be to continue working on those techniques and combine it with practicing some other lessons in the meantime to keep things fun. Send me a PM or post in my instructor board if you need any help along the way, I'd be glad to post feedback and tips for you and help you pass this phase -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net
