Approaching Higher Speeds Mentally

I'm too excited to write anything right now, but I'll try. I've been training speed for some months now, and I was able to see some results. However, I lacked the faith in myself and therefore I wasn't able to develop myself to the fullest.

Yesterday I woke up, grabbed my guitar and kind of felt that "hey, this could work", so I tried it out. I put the metronome at 160 bpm, 25 bpm higher than I was previously able to play... and it worked! It was actually easy for me.

It was then that I realized that hard work is needed to play fast, but it is also the feeling of playing fast, the faith in your accuracy and handspeed. smile.gif

Yeah, I agree - a lot has to do with the way in which you think. Thinking "I will never be able to play that fast" already forces you to play with a limitation. I make a habit of atleast trying something at tempo when I'm working something up to speed, even if I can't play most of the notes - it gives me a realisation of the kind of motion I'm aiming for, and like you've said.. sometimes you can surprise yourself. I've also found that the key to attaining a progression, particularly with speed, is to keep pushing the boundaries.
Great news with the progress you've made, and you've inspired me to keep at it too biggrin.gif

This is very true. You have to believe that you can do it otherwise you won't be able to. Also hard practice only pays up in the following days when we pickup the instrument and say - WOW I can play this now smile.gif

Congrats mate. Yes, definitely preparing yourself mentally is one necessity. If you don't believe in yourself, you will never be able to do it.

Imagine setting a clicker to 170bpm, mentally preparing for 16th note triplets - and they start popping out like crazy! biggrin.gif I think my fingers would fall apart out of "mental awareness" after couple of mins biggrin.gif

Well done and congrats smile.gif It's takes practice a while to "gel" in your brain so you may find you keep waking up better than you went to sleep. Keep up your practice! It's working! I"m having another Alternate Picking video lessons this coming saturday that will help you work on your speed and precision, please do join us smile.gif

Todd

First off, I'd suggest gripping the pick so that not much pick is sticking out. Try to get the point of the pick to point out at a 90 degre angle from your thumb. Here is a picture to demonstrate.

Also, here are some things to try.

ALTERNATE PICKING TIPS AND TRICKS
1.)Choke up on the pick. Only the point should be sticking out.
2.)Don't pick from the elbow! Control the motion from your wrist or fingers.
3.)Try a very heavy pick, 1.2 MM or greater so as to eliminate "flex" in the pick.
4.)Try to sharpen your pick to a point with sandpaper or dremmel or what not so that the surface area
striking the string is as small as possible. There are some "training" picks that are shaped this way on purpose.
5.)Work with a metronome ALWAYS so that you keep your picking even.

6.)MOST IMPORTANT: Join me this saturday and every saturday for a live VIDEO CHAT lesson on ALTERNATE PICKING. We have been doing a series on that very topic for several weeks now. Here are the notes so far. Many great workouts to try.

LESSON NOTES ON GMC FOR MY ALTERNATE PICKING SERIES

Above all
Practice!

After getting the good mentality, hard work truly pays off.

I can do 16th notes at 160 bpm quite easily. I'm becoming a shredder. biggrin.gif

Very well-known phenomenon. It usually happens after resting for few days, even a week.
I mean, in order for anyone to be able to play fast "mentally", first he has to have physical part in his little finger.
