The trick is to slow things down and watch your right hand while you are playing alternate picking and concentrate hard not to play twice the same stroke in a row. You shouldn't increase the tempo until you can comfortably alternate pick through the scale exercise.  I"ve got an old RG 560 which I just LOVE. They have recently reissued the RG series after years of requests from players.
