My band is competing in a band contest next Friday biggrin.gif. Our sound and music has been improving over the years, so Im not worried about sound and originality so far, but our podium performance has always been a bit.... boring so far. I was wondering if you guys have any tips recarding this. We don't want to overdo it (no fake acting and stuff like that), but want the audience to be entertained, and not looking at a bunch of statues tongue.gif.

Thanks! smile.gif

Don't think about it to much is the best advice I can give... We have the same problem, we don't move around too much. But as you said yourself, it shouldnt be "acted". Not moving much is better than moving around looking fake.

Maybe just talk more between songs. I don't think it is wrong to have some stuff rehearsed. Like having guitarist + basist do some moves together or even synced a few times during a performance for example. It doesnt have to be much or very complicated, it can be as easy as changing side on stage a few times. By having a few ready-to-go moves at specific times, and preferably together with other people on stage, you know what to do and when and you don't have to think about it to much. I think that is the key to looking natural on stage.

That said I am usually too damned nervous to move around while performing live smile.gif

I never played before audience ( well in elementary school, saying some poems:P ) but from the audience point of view, I think it is important to see that the band feels their own music. If the musicians feels what their are doing, it doesn't matter to much if they move much or not. If the player seems nervous, concentrated not to make mistakes instead of relaxed and consumed by "his music world" he isn't a interesting image.

I belive that its important to show the audince you are having fun and love the music....

Maybe try and reherse some stage moves that you do in the show....

If you look at some great band they always got some stage moves in their arsenal

Hehe well there won't be any breakdancing and sliding on my knees hahah, the stage is fairly small, and there's a keyboard standing in the middle haha.

I do believe a band that is enjoying the music is much more entertaining to watch than overly nervous and focussed musicians.

I've always had the same kind of problem when performing.
I don't move much and am often self conscious about it, especially when shooting live DVDs...
But after watching it, I realize that it really doesn't matter that much.
Be relaxed and natural, try not to think about what people are thinking about your visual appearance and focus on your music, it shouldn't be boring!
Music shouldn't need anything extra if it's good enough. Only my 2 cents there.... :-)

Well it would be good to make a cool coreography in some songs, like where the beat is good. Some of the most common stuff include headbanging, moving the head left&right, simple steps, and jumping. You should all do the moves for a more better experience.

Just enjoy the show. smile.gif
I did my first gig a year ago and I just enjoyed being on the stage.
Afterwards I got many good comments about it so just relax. If you want to move on the stage MOVE! If you want to stay at your own comfortable spot then STAY THERE! wink.gif

I would suggest being yourself..Bands practice their stage performance through experience..As time goes by you get more relaxed on stage and be able to be more expressive in your attitude when playing..I would suggest relaxing and getting into the groove by tapping your foot , getting into the the "playing pose" and not standing perfectly straight, headbanging...Really those little things will add to the performance..Be sure that you will get it to a higher level through gigging experience! One thing to keep in mind is that its very important to balance your performing act with actual playing..Moving around and doing crazy stunts can result in lower quality of playing performance.Either physically from the nature of moves or mentally (for example you get preoccupied with what you are doing that you forget what should be played)...So its best to find the sweet spot somewhere in the middle...IMO playing quality of a band is most important..So if you feel like you can only stand like statue to be able to play well - do so...

do you have a singer? he doesnt realy have to concentrate on anything and usually the eyes of the audience should be on him. if the bass makes a couple of mistakes or the rythem messes a chord or two nothing would happen so i suggest that the bass singer and rythem(no offense but they usually need less concentration during verses and stuff) will do most of the things and the drummer and lead guitar make sure you make decent music. worked for me(thogh i cant say im very experienced were a pretty mewbish band and only play in my school and stuff like that).

Well we do have a singer, but he also plays guitar and keyboard. So he doesn't really have alot of moving space hehe. We already did about 8 gigs, and they were all pretty stiff haha. But the singer does show emotion smile.gif. He's not just staring in oblivion without facial expression hahha.

I think PLAYING the music shouldn't suffer from your moving to much around resulting in mistakes. So I really need to see what is best for me. Headbanging is something I do automaticly when the beat is really pumping!

The good thing that I've notice with a lot of bands is that in some parts of the song a whole band starts headbanging together. This can really look effective, and not easy to do, so you can try that! smile.gif

Entertainment in music business is important nowdays
but it also varies a lot from one artist to another.
Take Britney per example, 100 of dancers, changing outfit every 2 mins etc.
And now look at the Mark Knopfler's show,
no talking, no jumping around, no jokes, just playing.
I guess it depends of music and the way you bring it to the audience.
Eitherways you should act naturally imo without too much talking,
jumping or dancing is also great but if you feel right doing that,
don't go against yourself and try to enjoy as much as you can,
if you enjoy=audience will as well. smile.gif

Totally agree that you should be smiling or do some kind of posing on stage. Not necessarily all the time, but often. I play in a hardrock band, and we`ve recived lots of good comments about our live-show. I think the main ingredients is good chemistry between the bandmembers, maybe some rehearsed stagemoves, some good old headbanging and rocknroll poses and last and maybe most important: put your soul in the music while playing.
