  • Hi GMCers! This tutorial covers the methods of determining the key of a song or composition. You will often find yourself in a situation where you need to determine the key of a song by only listening to composition (don't have time for tabs, or in-depth analysis). Often you will need to start playing right away, so these methods will save you that precious time.

    Why is so important to learn to determine the key? This lesson is not only about theory. It shows the importance of learning all the important scales in order to be an accomplished musician. You should watch this lesson, and after it, ask yourself these questions:

    - Do I know all the minor and major pentatonic scale positions? If not, time to master them.
    - Do I know the diatonic scale across the fretboard? If not time to master it.
    - Do I know what modes are and how they are made? If not, time to master them.

    Tuning:
    *Standard E
    * E - A - D - G - B - E
    (From thick to thin)

    Equipment & Tone Settings:
    * US 60th Anniversary Modded Strat, bridge humbucker
    * Focusrite OctoPre MKII preamp/converter into E-MU 1212m audio system
    * Cubase 5 with Amplitube 3 (Blackface amp emulation with reverb)
