  • Hi and welcome to my latest lesson. This time we have a beginner solo in the style of the one and only Edward Van Halen.

Edward Lodewijk "Eddie" Van Halen (born January 26, 1955) is a Dutch-born American musician, songwriter and producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, occasional keyboardist and co-founder of the hard rock band Van Halen. He is considered to be one of the world's greatest guitarists, and one of the most influential rock guitarists of the 20th century. - Wikipedia

One of the things Eddie is most famous for is his use of two handed tapping, where you use the fingers of your picking hand to tap onto the fretboard, essentially extending the range of notes you can play. Another thing Eddie does often is to bend a note and then tap a note further up whilst the bent note is still held. Not just a flash player, though, Eddie has always had melody at the forefront of his work and we get a glimpse of his more melodic side in the latter half of the lesson.

It's very important to pay attention to:

    Timing
Cleanliness of phrasing / avoiding unwanted string noise
    Good pitch control whilst bending

Have fun with this lesson and I will see you next time!
