Jad Diab - What If Angus Was A Shredder SI Lesson
Contents |
Introduction
Hey GMCers, how are you,
This is my second lesson here on GMC, if you haven't checket out my first lesson yet, you can see it here.
In this lesson, we're going to work on a "in the style of AC/DC" backing track, by the way the chord progression of the verse is A - C - D - C ==> funny coincidence right
As you may notice, my playing have nothing to do with Angus Young, it's just that I thought it might be cool to see how it would sound if angus was a shredder, so in my solo, you'll see a lot of shred runs, sweepings, and also some pinch harmonics. I hope you'll like my lesson, and I hope that I'll manage to be an instructor at GMC one day.
Main Video
The solo is in the key of A dorian, but I've used some out notes from time to time, check out the explanations below.
I'm using alternate picking all the time
Main Video: main_video.wmv ( 16.31MB )
Video 1
The video starts with some fast trills in order to create some tense and announce the begining of the solo and ends with a pinch harmonic followed by a bridge diving

This lick starts with a 4 strings sweeping. Don't forget the small bend on B on the D string.

First shred run, practice it slowly, if you're using correct alternate picking, you should start with a downstroke and end up with a downstroke too. this run is followed by some bendings. While doing those bendings, it's important that your ring finger should be almost perpendicular to the fretboard, and be carreful not to touch the high E string while doing the bending, which will cause muting it.

Video 5
Here we're using the tremolo to dive in and then I hit (with my left hand) the fretboard and then release the tremolo to create a note. By the way, have you noticed how I'm using palm muting to announce new shred runs ?

Video 6
This shred run contains some wide sliding, practice it slowly, I'm sure you'll manage to do it. If you fail to reach the wanted note on the first slide, it's not really dramatical, but the second one should be played with accuracy, we want to go back to the root note wich is A.

That's a really cool tap sweep, you can devided in to two sweeps. The first part is a CMajor arpegio followed by a tapping on the A note and then the second part is a 3 strings Aminor arpegio that ends on the A note too. When you're playing fast runs or fast sweepings, it's really important to focus on notes that last, that permits you to accentuate your playing, because listener's ears is attracted by those notes. At the end of the lick we've got an out note (the major third), I really like how it sounds.

Okay so here we've got some string skipping, so again practice it slowly.

Here I'm sounding a little like AC/DC hehe, there's a small sweep that permit us to go from one lick to another. Lot's of bending too, carefull to reach the pitch that we're looking after.

One more sweep at the beginning (the last one ), if you've got some difficulities on fingering, you can choose the way you like it.

Video 11
Here I'm using another out note, a really interesting one, I'm using a triton, it's a diminished fifth and it sounds spooky hehe, then I'm using my tremolo to create some harmonics, check out the "using the tremolo" part to see how I'm doing it, and then I'm muting the strings with my right hand in order to get a clean legato run. Check out the "switching the pick from the index finger to the middle finger" part to see how do I quickly change my pick position in order to get a good catch on the fretboard.

Fast shred runs (actually same speed than the others lol), it's high on the fretboard, you might have some problems if you have big hand with long fingers like me, but practice slowly and I'm sure everybody can do it. At the last part of the tab, you hit the G note on the B strings 3 times (use your palm to create a staccato feel).

Backing tracks
I've added some backing track, you can practice my lesson or JAM with the BT, and don't hesitate to upload your takes I'll be happy to listen to them. (I've had some problem with the backing tracks, actually I've lost the original one, so I made a new one)
Guitar pro
You'll find in it the solo + the backing track and some drums to create a sort of metronome.
