Joe Satriani

Joseph "Satch" Satriani is an American guitarist and teacher who greatly increased the popularity of instrumental rock.

Career

Early Life

Satriani was born on July 15, 1956, in Westbury, New York, U.S. At the age of 14 he started to play guitar after he heard of the death of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. He became an accomplished guitarist and teacher. Among his many students were Steve Vai and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet.

Not of This Earth

Not of This Earth was Satriani's breakthrough first full album and heralded the start of instrumental rock.

Equipment

Satriani has a variety of pedals, amplifiers, rack effects, and guitars, resulting in vast differences in sound, even between songs in the same set. His most common set-up, however, usually includes JS series (Satch's own signature guitar line from Ibanez) guitars, particularly the JS1000 and JS1200, and several BOSS pedals, in addition to plenty of other effects. He often uses digital effects and preamps, particularly in the studio. Satriani has used amplifiers from many different companies in the past, including Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, and Peavey (who he has a signature series, the JSX, with).
