Rock is a popular genre of music that originated in the 1960s, strongly influenced by rock and roll. Rock does however have influences from other sources such as folk, rockabilly and classical.

It is usually characterized by a strong beat laid down by the bass and drums, and lots of power chords in the guitar.

The average rock band contains at least one electric (sometimes acoustic) guitar, an electric bass guitar, drums, a singer, and sometimes a keyboard or synthesizer.

Rock and Roll

The first Rock music was Rock and Roll. This style came around in the 40s and 50s. It is strongly influenced by Rhythm and Blues, and Country music. It is generally quite fast pace and uses I IV V chords, often in 12 bar blues chord prgressions. Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" is one of the most famous Rock and Roll songs.

Early Rock

In the 60s heavily blues influenced bands emerged like The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and The Beatles. These were some of the first Rock bands. These first Rock bands were mainly British.
