Been looking for some monitors for the band so I can hear my self over the boogie (Not easy!) rather than floor monitors Isee a lot of bands using in ear stuff now, would it be feasible to use in ear monitoring for vocals whilst using un mic'd guitars, drums etc??

cheers.

Yeah, Im pretty much interested in that too.... I checked up some solutions, but all seems to be way expensive - if You relly wanna get some quality. I dont remember its names by now, but the earphones will be bout 2-300 EUR, and then You got the receiver & sender, from 400 EUR and then upwards depending on channels, signal strenght etc. A cheap man solution will be to have them non-wireless routed together with the guitar-cable, and I think You can get a pretty decent plugs for some 80 EUR and some headphone amp....

Sensitive equipment and expensive. Staffay gave a very good estimation of costs if you want something that will do the job properly. If you have a budget that big for in-ear, sure you can use them. It will require some trial & error until you get mix and leveling done properly, and getting used to the sound in earphones. Another option is to buy a relatively cheap active monitor speaker for yourself.

I know you are not looking for standard monitors but take a look at this:
http://www.tc-helicon.com/voicesolovsm300xt.asp

Concept seems very interesting, I wonder how it works in practice smile.gif

I like the look of this mate, gives you control over your own vocal volume so no crappy monitor mix, also seems it would be better for smaller gigs where a floor wedge would be intrusive, this could be the solution im after! Cheers Bogdan! cool.gif

I saw it in store couple of times and its price was really nice. TC makes some excellent gear and you should go to the store and test it out. Since its so close to your head (by being mounted on the mic stand) - I think it will be more then powerful enough for good monitoring...

Go visit a doctor that is specialized on hearing and ears (dunno the correct term right now^^).
He can make you a set of earplugs that fit perfectly into your ears (~200 bucks). Those earplugs are not only great for concerts and loud rehearsals as they lower the level of the volume you hear without altering the tone; they als have a hole that fits standard in-ear headphones!

This way you can not only lower the volume surrounding you, you can get a really good in ear moitoring with you Ipods headphones into the custom made earplugs!

Zakk has a great point here. Your hearing is crucial to your life as a musician. I can't tell you how many guys I know that are partially deaf just from playing live gigs without ear protection. I started wearing ear plugs during gigs when I noticed my ears were ringing a lot and my high end sensitivity was dropping. Once permanent damage is done to your ears, it won't ever heal.

Live shows are very, very loud and a great way to wreck your hearing. If you can afford it, get some plugs made up by an ear specialist that will protect your ears.

A friend of mine who is a producer has something called Tinitus which is a permanent ringing in his ears due to producing live shows for years.

I was the only guy on stage typically who was wearing any ear protection. Stuffing plugs in your ears doesn't sound very metal but neither does being partially deaf before your time.

We are getting here a bit out of topic but +1 on this definitely. Ear plugs are a must if go to loud places (gigs/rehearsals).

I have written a review on ear plugs I use which I found very interesting:

Sure would hate to forget where I put them. The Teknine Nine Millimeter earphones? are made by a company called MUNITIO and almost sound like a decent deal for $250:
