Uli Jon Roth is a German born guitarist who first came to prominence as the lead guitarist for The Scorpions, playing on 4 studio albums in the 70's, before forming his own band, Firewind and later recording classically influenced solo albums.
Uli's early work fused his love of Hendrix style phrasing with classical orientated arpeggio sequences. A great introduction to this would be his lead work on the song "Sails of Charon" by Scorpions.
Roth's playing features very precise string bending and staccato notes, which are cut short by resting the picking hand against the string. His picking is also dynamic and strong, perhaps a requirement due to the technological gear limitations of the day. Some players like Roth and Richie Blackmore developed a precise picking style as the lack of compartively high gain in the 70's meant you couldn't get away with being too sloppy. Well, you could be sloppy but it would be obvious.
Uli often used guitar harmonies as well, so we'll be including that element in this lesson too. This will mean you need to be accurate with your timing as you need to lock in with another guitar line.
So, have fun with this lesson and keep in mind your tone, bending control, timing and overall precision.
Enjoy!
