  • Hi Guys. Welcome to my latest lesson which is a furious solo based on Scorpions' lead guitarist Matthias Jabs. Jabs is a very high energy player with a style that is reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen and fellow German axe hero, Michael Schenker.

He uses a lot of hammer ons/pull offs to generate his flashy licks. He mainly uses the Minor Pentatonic and Natural Minor scales in his lead work, although he has been known to use the Major Pentatonic in songs like Arizona off the 1982 album, Blackout.

This is quite a difficult lesson because it asks for a lot of fretting hand stamina. There are a lot of strong phrases that use string bending and these occur very quickly and in close succession with faster passages so it will help make your fingers stronger!

The backing is the same backing which features in my Scorpions: Rhythm lesson. The tempo is 120bpm and they key of the backing starts off in A Minor before going to the second section which is in E Minor. Naturally the scales used are the A Minor Pentatonic & Natural Minor and the E Minor Pentatonic & Natural Minor. As the Minor Pentatonic notes are found within the minor scales I've included just the Natural Minor diagrams below.

Have fun, make sure you warm up and, if it helps, imagine you are playing this in a stadium of thousands of people and the year is 1982 !

    Ben
